Hello everyone. I have a 12 year old American Pitbull, Maggie. Maggie had recently, and suddenly, lost her eye sight approximately 2 months ago. After a couple vet appointments and a couple trips to the Purdue small animal hospital it was determined that she has a brain tumor. There isn't really anything we can do. She has been adjusting well to the vision loss, better than we have actually. However, she has been showing signs of pain/discomfort the past few days. She pants and paces a lot, very restless, and has been pawing at her beds quite often. Yesterday we noticed some twitching in her legs. That being said, she is eating and drinking good and using the bathroom normally as well so we do not think that it's "that time" yet. She had been through some high dose rounds of prednisone (40 mg) and antibiotics and we are now almost through winging her off the prednisone, she has one more half of a 20 mg pill to take. We have tried rimadyl in the past but she had some side effects. We have recently heard that people have given their dogs tramadol. Is this safe? And do vets prescribe it? I have only heard of people taking this drug. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Deputy3718,

I am really sorry to hear about "Maggie"

And I am really sorry that I am replying so late, I have not seen your message which is so strange ...

As far as I know this is possible to prescribe Tramadol for dogs and cats BUT I am sure that this should be under supervision of a Vet , especially because your Maggie is 12 years old and she has a serious health condition issue.

Please do not prescribe it yourself otherwise you may put her in a very bad condition.

Please share Maggie's Photos with us here :

And you would be able to find more details about Brain tumor in dogs here :

I wish you and Maggie the best.

Please feel free if there is any other thing that we can help you with.

Good luck.
Alex.

Oh..... I am really sorry to hear that.

Deputy3718 (sorry I do know your name), You know I have had many pets in my life .. mostly cats and dogs and all of them where special to me .When I did lose one nothing could have replaced his or her place. So I do understand you very well.

Maybe some people would find it to be cruel to say she is now relieved but I am Vet and I know she was definitely in a great pain which no owner would be able to see.

I do not know if you have any other dogs and I am aware that having a pet is costly and time consuming but in my opinion pets (and mostly dogs) are the best friends of humans. So I would recommend when you felt better , you go ahead and adopt a new dog from a shelter which not only would give you the opportunity to experience having a new friend but it would also provide a poor dog a new home and in many case a new life.

We have created a new section for our members recently so that they can share stories of their pets with others. I know that this may not be a really good time but if you like, it would be great hearing about your memories with Maggie.

Anyways again I am really sorry to heard this terrible news and I am so sad that you have found our website in such a terrible condition.

Wish you the best.

P.S.
If you allow me I would add this image to our gallery.

Please add it to the gallery! Thanks for the kind words by the way. My name is Brandon Napier. We had to put one of dogs down last year and she was our last one. She is definitely in a better place now and the suffering is over which is a great relief. Definitely wanting a new dog soon and I'm looking forward to starting the next adventure. Thanks again.
