Important Causes of Dog Snout Swelling

The swelling of a dog snout can cause respiratory distress and is often an indication of other medical issues. If swelling occurs, quickly identifying the source of the swelling will allow the appropriate treatment to be administered and may prevent serious complications.

Important Causes of Dog Snout Swelling

  1. Infection is the most common cause for swelling in a dog's nose. This can be from a laceration or puncture and will probably be painful if touched. If the injury is severe, a vet may prescribe antiobiotics.
  2. Allergic reactions may also cause swelling in a dog's nose. Usually allergic reactions from bee stings or some other insect can be treated with Benadryl and doses vary based on the weight of the animal.
  3. Snake bites will typically result in extreme inflammation and should be treated immediately. While most bites are not fatal, it is important to keep the animal quiet so the poison does not spread as quickly. Often snake bites are treated with steroids if the dog's health is in question.
  4. Acetaminophen toxicity can also result in swelling in the snout and head. In addition to swelling, the dog's gums may be discolored and severe drooling. Hospitalization is required and in extreme cases blood transfusions are necessary to counteract the effects of the acetaminophen on the animal's liver.
Regardless of the cause, it is advisable to seek treatment immediately if your dog exhibits any difficulty breathing or vomiting in order to prevent further issues with your dog's health.
